How NOT to climb the property ladder (Toronto Life article)

Wednesday Oct 25th, 2017

Share

The November 2017 issue of Toronto Life seems to have given me a lot to write about since I just posted my take on their "Next Hot Neighbourhoods" cover article. This post is about a semi-regular feature called "Property Ladder" where they show the journey where people have climbed from a starter home worth X to their current home worth Y. It generally is presented like "Wow, look at the great house they have now. These people were so smart/fortunate to get in... [read more]

Revisiting the house / condo price gap

Friday Oct 19th, 2018

Back in March I wrote a blog post looking at the price gap between detached houses and condo apartments in the 416, noting it had come well off of the spring 2017 highs and was back to 2015 levels (on an absolute dollars basis) or 2013 levels (on a ratio basis). HPI charts - December 2018

Friday Jan 11th, 2019

The MLS Home Price Index (HPI) is designed to act like the more familiar Consumer Price Index (CPI). While the CPI tracks the price of a basket of goods, the HPI tracks the price of a basket of house attributes. For a more detailed look into how the HPI works, check out this blog post. It's been a long time since I've posted the HPI charts, but with 2018 just ending I thought it would be a good time to share a look-in. Note, I zero-in on just the 416. Different parts of the... Toronto Real Estate returns report: 20 years of ROI - Q4 2018

Wednesday Jan 16th, 2019

Are you curious how your house or condo has appreciated over time compared to the average in the city? Or how those average price increases look versus the stock market? Well then you came to the right place. I've been compiling this after the June and December market statistics are released. Here's where you can find the posts for Q4 2017, Q2 2017, Q4 2016 and the first primitive one I did for Q2 2016. I will show some of the charts in this blog post, but for the full... [read more]
